What are your thoughts on adding a fretboard extension shim when doing a neck reset? An additional extra amount of ‘fall away’ after resetting a neck seems acceptable to me for most guitars, as most people aren’t using those upper frets on a non-cutaway guitar anyway. I’ve always been of the understanding that on vintage guitars it’s usually regarded as best practice not to add (or take away) anything non-original to the guitar (except worn out parts replacements like frets, etc) I recently had a customer request there be a shim and ‘no fall away’ on a vintage Martin, which I will oblige but felt uneasy about.
So, to shim or not to shim? That is the question- thanks Elders!
