This is what happened when this guitar fell off a wall hook, and the head stock of the guitar hanging below it punched out a new sound hole. I don’t consider the result a success. In fact I’m embarrassed that I wound up with an outline around the repair the screams “Here I am!”. I’ve decided that instead of letting it be just a cringe worthy experience, I should have the humility to ask my peers for advice on how I could have done a better job to avoid outlining my repair.

What I tried to do was feather sand the existing finish around the bare wood, and then mask around the feathered edge where the feathering stopped. After applying color, I removed the masking an carefully scraped down the color I added over the feathered edge. The hope was that it would result in a lighter outline around the repair that I could darken as needed using Ian’s shellac/dye method. On the plus side, Ian’s grain painting method worked well to hide the areas that had filler to replace missing wood.

Any suggestions are welcome, except for the “are you crazy for taking that on?” which I already know to be true!
