Hivemind suggestions for a wrecked archtop
So this one is a real doozy. Gorgeous Heritage hollowbody, destroyed in shipping. Owner got a full refund and they didn’t want the guitar back, so he has no money in it currently. He’s a collector and longtime friend/client/student of mine, which is the only reason I’m even considering it, he understands the potential nightmare this could be, and he builds very serious race cars for a living, so I can have in-depth and frank conversations about the realities of the project with him. I haven’t seen the instrument in person yet, just these photos and a phone conversation about it.
That said, we’re spitballing strategies for it. Everything from making molds and building new back and sides from scratch, to glue/bondo a purely structural repair and paint it black.
It’s a full hollowbody with a solid reinforcing block along the top for the pickup mounts, neck block *seems* to be intact. The sides broke below the binding and kerfing, so I’m worried that there’s nothing to glue to, and full disassembly/rebuild is the best option.
Anyone here ever tackle something like this? Ideas, horror stories, and advice are all welcomed. Budget really isn’t a limiting factor on this, we’re just trying to figure the most appropriate avenue to take. I should be able to see it in person within the next week or so, and will update accordingly. Thanks in advance!
