Hey y’all, just been tasked with setting up one of those hoffner violin basses — they’re strange but fun things, this is one of the modern reissues but it still has the bridge with the frets hammered into it for saddles. The owner plays in a punk band and has had issues with the low E string jumping out at times. I assume without some way of getting the tailpiece to be held down rather than at the angle it wants to be, the best option would be to replace those lengths of fret with jumbo ones and file a groove into them to hold the string? I assume given the design this is not an uncommon occurrence. Only asking here as I’ve not worked on that exact design much but there must be some level of prior expertise with them.

Thanks in advance for any advice y’all might have. 🙂

You’ve got the right idea. I worked on a hofner, I had to refret the saddle with taller fretwire, then slotted the saddle frets. The low E was buzzing on the front of the saddle because the fret was so low in my case.

Thank you! Feels like the best way to go about it with the least change to the instrument, but still wanted confirmation from someone more familiar before going and doing anything permanent. Failing that fixing it for sure I can probably just tell them to play less hard to stop it popping out of the saddle entirely. 🙂

With the slots deep enough and at least 4 or 5 degrees brake angle behind the bridge, your customer should be happy. 😀
