Wax warmer for hide glue
Posted by Alex Kokawski Cosmic Sea repairs on July 31, 2024 at 11:09 amCouldnt find anything on here about this, but looking to see if anyone is using wax warmers for their hide glue/ wax potting needs. They are pretty cheap but I really don’t want to have to buy one every few months. Currently have a hot plate and pot, and hoping a wax warmer will be a bit less annoying to deal with.

That’s what I use, my violin friend in the building uses a double with one for hot water, that’s what I started with but it was too big. I have a single one now like the one there and it’s great.
I 3d printed a lid inspired by Ian’s. It has three holes, I put the glue in little plastic squeeze bottles and that works awesome (the volume of the glue keeps it warm in the bottle when you pull it out of the water). I keep another bottle with just water and then there’s a cap for a hole in case I want to dip something in water.
Also a hole for a candy thermometer.
Makes working with hide glue super easy.
Glue bottle idea stolen from Laurent Brondel.
Bottles (tbh I don’t love these bottles but they work fine):

Forgot to hit the reply to your thing before so hopefully you see the below reply as well. I have a bunch of the below glue bottles. I keep fish glue in them currently and they work well for that. But I only get those hot with tap water and haven’t tried them on the hot plate at higher temps.

Ordered a 3d printer athat will be here in a couple days. It’s a bed slinger and open frame so I only really have the ability to work with PLA and PETG and can use the carbon fiber variants of those as well. Was curious what kind of filament you used for that lid. I think PETG CF should be able to handle the temps of the wax warmer but just curious what you had used. Thanks!

<div>I used PLA. Obviously not idea for heat but it looks pretty ok, I’ve used it off and on for maybe 6 months.</div>

Awesome, thanks. I’ll give PLA a whirl. Going to order this sun pal + and the Bambu lab pets hf and see how they are. My printer comes today so I need to order those rolls stat because I am pretty sure I will blow through the current one I have making test zero clearance inserts for my band saw and some other non sense haha

Fantastic! Super helpful. I will be investing in a 3D printer in the not too distant future so thanks for sharing that with me. I will have to order one of these today. Have you used this to do any pick up potting as well? Is the secondary pot deep enough to place a larger mason jar with wax into it?
-
no idea about potting pickups. you might want a double pot. I think they are big enough to contain a pickup, for sure.

I don’t want to have to deal with cleaning the wax from the pot when using it for glue, but I could just buy 2 of them and have one dedicated to each job at their price point.

If I buy 2 of the, one I will leave for just wax. I wouldn’t want the double cause of size on my bench. I have a stupidly small space and I don’t have another surface to keep the pot at currently. But I am fine with having 2 units and dedicate them to different tasks.

OMG I bought one and it’s a total piece of $shit, made in China, thin cheap aluminum pot with a plastic handle, like on a cheap Dollar Tree toy, and not UL approved (or any other safety approval). I won’t even plug it in!
How do I delete my post about it in this thread?
