Print problem, 2nd layer

Got my new printer a few weeks ago, and I have been loving life in 3D. I have made a bunch of cauls and tools in preparation for my next builds. On all the prints the first layers were a little fuzzy, so I did some research and adjusted the z offset. Got my first layers in the pocket. But that caused some horrible problems. Now I can’t even finish a print. First layer is fine. Second layer is hairy and fuzzy. Seems like the nozzle is dragging and extruding too much? Or Z axis isn’t moving up enough?

Then the third layer, the nozzle is dragging through all the fuzz and it just irons the whole surface. I tried leveling the bed better, cleaning the nozzle, and raising the heat. I have done plenty of research the last days, but it’s nice to have a dialogue to bounce around ideas. So lay them on me.

My plans to try later today are to try using a new or different g code. And maybe return to factory settings. If that’s possible.

Attached is a photo of the third layer. Fuzzies gone and surfaced is melted smooth by nozzle dragging.

    Look forward to input

Probably the gantry is out of level. Raise the Z up far enough to slide under both ends and make sure the gap is equal. I also highly recommend adding the double Z axis upgrade.

This is one easy thing I haven’t checked! I will Check That. And thanks for the tip on the upgrade. I will Probly do That in the Future. It’s cool there’s so many upgrades that are possible and they aren’t really that expensive. I trad also to check the z steps and the extrusion stepper motor. But I want to exhaust the easier checks first. Let me know if there’s any other idea you think of. I heard we have two new other 3D family members now. @rickyk76 and @Florian_Camerer

Yeah, I also b ought the Ender 3 V2 Neo – the offer was too good to let go by. I also invested right away in the double Z axis according to Ian’s 3D shopping list here. Makes sense. I still have to install everything, though. Ian and Anthony, which software are you using for designing stuff? And Ian, do you know where the files for the Don MacRostie style Shellac rotating gizmo are? I would love to print those and assemble it with the comprehensive list that Mike Brower posted…. Thanks!

We are getting super close to a relaunch of loothprints in a much more conventional “thingiverse” style format. As soon as that is ready, I’ll start migrating again. For now, all of the old stuff is still sitting there on the guilded server. Not sure if Mike posted that one there, but I’ll get all the stuff from him once the new regime goes live.

I for sure need to print a shellac mixer. As soon as I get my machine sorted out again. We both use fusion 360. Ian dabbles in other things as well. I really like Fusion and it’s great that it is cloud based and parametric. A little annoying you can only work in wifi. But there’s wifi everywhere.

I printed up a bunch of these when I got started

I haven’t used my printer in months…I will probably need to print a bunch more, it’s been moved in the meantime.

Your filament may be old/damp depending on how it was stored. That’s a big problem with PLA.

I don’t have the 2nd z slider thing but never had an issue but I might not know what I’m missing.

The problem with Ender upgrades is you might end up paying for a Bamboo labs printer after not too many of them.

Oh yea, there’s actually the slices that came with the card in the begining. I can give one of those a try and see if it works better than my current shit

there’s all sort of very specific calibration files you can get. The Benchy boat thing though is a sort of torture test so you can test out a bunch of problems at once.

I made a bunch of 12 sided musical note dice as test pieces too so I didn’t have 8 million boats floating around.

Update: glad I didn’t dive into trying the complicated fixes first. All this time I was working with the same slice file I made. Adjusting the z offset. Getting terrible results. Today I found some time to get at it again. Tried a file that the machine came with. It’s printing flawless. There must just be a bug in the slicer file I made. I will go back and start from scratch on that. In the mean time, my niece gets another Benchy boat to play with

what slicer are you using? I had best results with Prusaslicer. I’m sure there are reasons not to use it but it worked for me.

That’s what I am using too. I did a lot of research on the top free slicers. And it seemed the best for me. Easy to use. Good quality
