Hey everyone, I just had a quick question. What type of tape are you all using for lacquered maple fingerboards when doing fretwork? I’m concerned about the finish peeling off with the tape and I’d like to prevent this as much as possible. I know this was discussed somewhere, maybe the Fret-O-Rama videos. I was considering getting the StewMac orange tape but I could use some guidance. Thanks!

I got to great lengths to avoid tape on finish because of pulling finish off way to many times. I like using the metal masks. I’ve never used the ones with the rubber band holder, but I always wanted to.

I’m sure someone has a really good recommendation for ultra low tack tape.

I hear you. I’d prefer to use tape simply because I don’t like the idea of leaving a bare fretboard. I see that StewMac sells low tack tape in 1″ thickness, but that would mean I’d need to slice it in half on the upper frets which I’d rather not have to do. I’ll poke around online for the time being.

the low tack tape is excellent.. you’re right, you need to cut it but it’s only another few minutes on the job. I recommend it…Steve.
