Martin 'Simple' Dovetail Neck Reset issues
Hi all,
I’ve just pulled the neck on a 2007 OM-1GT for a Neck Reset and it has Martins ‘Simple Dovetail’ with the CNC’d recessed fingerboard extension and heel.
Does anyone have any experience of working with these recessed joints? I was expecting it to be a Mortise/Tenon, and having never seen one ‘in the flesh’ before, I’m scratching my head…….a lot, whilst scowling at my sandpaper 🤔

I got this tip from someone else so I can’t take credit but it works well for me.
First trace the recessed area on the body with a piece of paper and a pencil then cut out the shape and glue the paper on top of 2 or 3 sheets of veneer laminated together or however deep you need it to be. Then you can use the edge of your belt sander to get your cutout to fit in the recess. Then use double stick tape to hold it in the recess. If there are any areas that are proud of the recess you can trim flush with a sharp chisel. And now you can proceed with sandpaper pulls as usual. You may have to check your angle a few times taking out the insert and bolting on the neck.

You can also make a Horseshoe shaped plate to accept the “tenon”, clamp it to your bench and pull or “floss” paper like a normal dovetail reset. You’re just doing it on a different surface.
