  • Fretboard thickness?

Posted by Alex Q Guitarworks on October 2, 2024 at 1:14 pm

I’m currently re-cad drawing my instruments, and I always wandered what other builderd use as standard fretboard thicnkess (before radiusing). I usually used 6mm over the years but I’m considering switching to a more thick 7.5mm. Mostly cause I have a wide collection of curly ebony I finally decide to use, and those are about 8mm thick, and seem a waste to thickness-sand 2mm of it.

What’s yours? Or, there’s a more ‘ridgid’ standard about it that I never knew?

I’ll reply: The thicker the fretboard, the thinner the neck will be. I would be more concerned with thinning out the neck. That mass is going to have to come from somewhere.

I make acoustic guitars, which are 21mm at the 1st fret. If the fretboard is 5mm, which leaves 16mm for the neck, plus a truss rod that is 10 mm, which leaves only 6 mm of wood behind the truss rod, I wouldn’t want less than that.

So your standard wood size before machining is 21mm for the neck and 6mm for the fretboard?

total of 21mm thick for the neck at the 1st fret. 5mm- 6 mm for the fretboard and 15 -16 mm for the neck.
