Reverend Club King 290 Bass Contour Control
Posted by Bill Knudson Tumeni Guitars on August 12, 2023 at 12:57 pmHey, gang. I was wondering if any of you were familiar with this guitar’s bass contour control. I’ve yet to find accurate schematics. I bought it around 2009. Any help would be appreciated.

Is that control missing? Why do you need a schematic/wiring diagram if you have the guitar?
-
Yes, the original control is missing. Years ago I replaced the stock P90 pickups with a set of Lollars. In the process I had to disconnect the bass contour control, but forgot to sketch a wiring diagram that showed where it should be reconnected. The pot was mounted in a very unorthodox place. I just want to finish what I messed up. I’ll post some photos tomorrow. Thanks for responding!

Thank you for posting the schematic. I’ll fiddle with tomorrow and see if it works. Here’s the story behind the need for the drawing:
Several years ago I put a pair of Lollar P90s in the guitar, but forgot to draw or take an image of how to reconnect the bass contour control to the circuit. The guitar’s volume and tone control, along with a three-position Strat-type pickup selector, are mounted on a Telecaster-type metal plate. The bass contour knob is mounted several inches away on a piece of pickguard material on the lower bout. I attempted to reconnect it a few different ways, but I couldn’t get it right. Somewhere in this house lies the original bass contour pot. The only thing I remember about it was that there was a very small ceramic capacitor soldered to it. No idea what the value the pot was. I’ve seen some schematics show it as a 1 meg. I contacted Reverend, who sent me a schematic that ultimately didn’t provide a solution. The guitar eventually took a back seat to my other guitars, and sat unused for a long time. Every once in a while I’d look online at other schematics, but there’s been nothing that looked like it would work. I’m considering put it up for sale, hence the need to install that bass contour control. Though it’s kind of an odd looking instrument, it’s really a very well-made and great sounding piece of work, especially with the Lollar P90s onboard.
I’ll post photos tomorrow afternoon.

Ah. Ok. If you use this pot wiring show in the diagram, and adapt it so the bass pot is up the other end of the guitar, I think you’ll be ok. The 1Meg your remember is the pot value — there’s often a high value used for the bass cut but I’ve used lower (and so has G&L) without any major hassle. The capacitor value is important, though. It’s a pretty low value capacitor for the bass cut. Look for a 0.0022µF (and pay attention to the number of zeros on the right of the decimal point). For the other, regular tone control, you can just use standard values.

The layout of the electronics in this 2006 Reverend is a rat’s nest of sloppy wiring. All my doing, I’m afraid. It’s a total mess. The few tests I ran didn’t work, so I’m going to put in new components, then try different wiring combinations before soldering anything permanently. Stay tuned.

Thanks, Gerry. I have 500k and 1 meg pots, and I know I’ve got the correct capacitors. The key is finding them. I’m going to use some short pieces of wire with alligator clips to jerry rig the connections before doing any soldering. I’ll let you know how it goes.

This is a High Pass Filter. It calculates the range of high frequency signals that a filter passes through.

Just following up on the Reverend wiring challenge. I emailed Reverend customer support, and they were kind enough to send me easy-to-follow wiring diagrams and a list of the capacitors needed. I yanked out the whole mess, ordered and received the necessary parts, and will start from scratch this weekend. Film at 11.

Great stuff, Bill. 👍
Can you post the info here to help out any looths who find themselves in the same pickle in the future?
-
I could. I’m just a bit leery of the possibility of betraying their confidence. Though they didn’t actually come out and tell me not to share the info, I feel obliged to run it past them before I post it. I just sent my contact an email. I’ll get back to you when I have an answer.

Tim Korenich from Reverend:
“I would not recommend sharing them (the wiring diagrams he sent me). I sent you our older diagrams with older pot and cap values that would have corresponded to the instrument from that time. We use 500K pots for everything these days, so I would rather you have folks ask me for diagrams so I can give them the appropriate information for their instruments. I do appreciate you checking, thank you!”
