Neck re-set shims – male? female?
Hey, just working through a Martin neck re-set and about to shim/re-fit the neck. What are peoples’ preferences for where to glue the shims? I know some prefer the female (neck block) sides, and some the male (neck) side. I kind of prefer the male side because adjustment means messing with the shim rather than existing surfaces but I’m interested in hearing any pros and cons…

Im no expert shimmer, having only about 50 under my belt at this point, but I make my shims and thickness them unattached to the guitar. When I am ready to Glue everything together, I usually use a dab or two of glue to attach the shims to the “tenon” of the dovetail, then coat the outside of the shim and the rest of the “tenon, and also coat the interior surfaces of the “mortice” of the dovetail, and then clamp it all home with a prayer and a piece of coal between my cheeks lol

I really like to keep the neck 100% unchanged. Other than making sure the surfaces are flat I leave it alone. The neck is something that cannot be replaced if I screw it up. I glue my shims in the body with a different glue, CA or epoxy in case I have to take it apart. Fingers crossed it has happened but not for a long time.
