I often get jobs changing the type of tuners on a guitar. In this case, the customer wanted open back Waverly style put on a guitar with sealed tuners. I have conversion bushings for 10mm holes, but they don’t fit tight and fall out. I need to plug and drill smaller holes to fit the bushings. I hate trying to find the center of a dowel after gluing them in to the tuner hole. My solution is to drill a center pilot hole with a jig in my drill press. I made a marking jig out of a block of hardwood. I drilled a 10mm hole with a brad point bit just deep enough for the tip to protrude out the back. I bought some 10mm hardwood dowels from ebay and push the block on a cutoff piece of dowel. Next I drill a pilot hole in the dowel using my block jig and a drill press vise. Change out the bit for a 1/4″ brad point and drill all the way through the dowel. I’ll use a Stew-Mac 1/4″ piloted reamer in the drill press after I glue the newly made wood bushings in the guitar to get the final diameter needed for Waverly tuner bushings. This all may be very obvious to most of you, but perhaps will help some if they encounter the same issues.
