  • Auto String Winder Recommendations?

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering if you all had a preference for auto string winders? I’ve always preferred manual winders since they give me the most control, but they are considerably slower. I’ve always felt that a cordless drill is too powerful and bulky, and if I have it in the wrong setting I run the risk of over tuning and snapping the string. I’ve also not found a bit that is universal for both guitar and bass tuner buttons. Any advice here? What are you all using? Thanks!

In our shop we use Milwaukee M12 screwdrivers. The guys like the Music Nomad tuner attachment. These kits are about $80 and we have three sets…so six batteries. We like the variable speed…The harder you press the trigger the faster it turns. We also have two of the matching rotary tools that get used all the time with the same batteries.

I keep a couple of these cheap B&D cordless screwdrivers in the shop. They’re inexpensive and have pretty low torque, almost too low. A charge seems to last a long time even with hard use. They last me about 4-5 years and I use the Music Nomad peg winder attachment for restrings which works on almost all tuning peg sizes except for Mandos.

I used to use the Paratuss Peg Winders which were great, but their outer shell was made of really fragile and brittle plastic that rarely survived a drop even on a carpeted floor.

Hi!! I have a bunch of these, can not recommend them enough

The speed control and clutch are great

The music nomad string winder attachment is the best, very safe

Me and all the techs had 2, one for screws and one for strings I am sure I still have use of my wrists because of it .

There is a winder that I had which was amazing, it eventually broke and I haven’t splurged and bought a new one. It was called “Jawoom”. It kind of looked like a short barreled pistol, aside from the fact that it was also a tuner which wound in either direction to get you in tune, it was also the best mid-speed winder I’ve ever used. It also amazed customers. I think they’re like 70 bucks. The auto tune function was pretty useful also, although I would always supplement by a quick twist of the wrist.
