I’m looking for a satin finish safe binding repair tape for Martin satin Lacquer. Looking to avoid “tape burn” on Martin Satin Lacquer. Recently I was “luckily “ repairing my dads Martin with satin sides and back. This was my first binding repair on a martin w/ satin back n sides. I was able to practice and left a few different tapes on the lacquer for about 8-12 hours. All left a minor “burn” visible in the right light at an angle. I tried 3M Scotch 897 Filament Tape w/ synthetic rubber adhesive because Doug spoke so highly of the filament tape in the Binding repair video( I know i didn’t use the exact brand and model he recommended).

I also tried a 3m green tape 401. Luckily I was able to buff and polish my dads guitar out to a semi gloss to remove the marks but I have another customers guitar in my shop with loose binding satin back and sides. I’d rather not have to end up doing some major finish repairs. Any tips or tricks?? Thanks!!

8-12 hours is too long for any tape, especially on those satin finishes. I aim for only a couple hours max. I’ll use a combination of the green 3m tape, filament tape, and low tack sign painters tape if its a delicate finish.

I like the 3m purple tape plus rubbing on shirt. It was the only thing that wouldn’t pull old lacquer of ’33 Gibson……….
