Gibson Neck Refinish
I’m refinishing this ‘68 Gibson EB-2 for a customer and I’m wondering if I should try to preserve the lacquer around the headstock or just do away with all of it. I must add the fella in the spray booth in Kalamazoo was very heavy handed. The clear finish is way too thick. And ugly! I’ll post more photos in a reply:

Man, that is pretty gnarly. You might see if Mohawk Amalgamator has any affect on it. I heard their formula changed though, so I’ll see if the one guy I know who uses it effectively likes the new stuff.
If not, you might try stripping it with compressed air. If you can preserve the oxidation of the wood and the original pore filler, your color match job is going to be a ton easier.

It occurs to me I didn’t thoroughly read your description. What are your thoughts on preserving the headstock finish ? Is this to protect the serial number ?

It has been stripped of its awful lacquer. Notice 2 separate coats at the heel? I’m attaching some photos. Maybe I’ll do a little sanding.

Yes! The serial number looks pretty good but I can stamp if it peels off. I’ll plan on taking it outside to work on it because it’s going to make a mess.
