I think it’s a good idea to run down to Home Depot and grab some pine or poplar and give these procedures a test before cutting wood that hurts to replace.

I second Ian’s idea here. I did make a bass neck from 3/4″ blank. It worked but was uncomfortably close and the feel of the neck is off because of it.

When I’m sourcing my own neck blanks I usually look at the stewmac site and more or less copy what they are selling for neck blanks dimension wise. .
Stupid but it works.

But I would say no. I think you want to start with stuff close to 1″ in general. 15/16″ or thereabouts. 3/4″ even if you pull it off is going to be stressful. You want some extra meat so you can properly flatten the fingerboard area, etc.

I was looking at Stewmac today and notice their neck blanks are 13/16″ for Fender guitars, 3/4″ is still going to bite you though, 13/16″ is cutting it close and they are surfaced both sides, 7/8″ or greater, particularly from rough lumber is going to give you a bit of breathing room.
