  • Truss rod replace on a 5string Fender jazz bass

    hello everyone.

I received a 5-string fender jazz bass with a damaged truss rod.

They broke the bullet, and, not happy with that, they replaced the bullet with one whose thread was of a different size, damaging the truss rod.

I saw that several take out the skunk, replace the truss rod and put it back or make a new one.

My question is, has anyone ever tried to remove the bottom part of the heel, to remove the truss rod and place a new one in there, instead of removing the entire skunk?

Would this be harmful in some way?

Is it too absurd an idea?

PS: I’m from Argentina, and buying a Fender neck or even a non-Fender one is neither cheap nor easy, which is why I’m taking that job.

    Thanks. 🙌

Yes, I just saw someone doing that recently. I’ll look around for it .

Hey ! I’m currently deep into the process of removing a trussrod from the skunk stripe and I’d preferably do it your way in the future (less invasive, and (I’d say) no risks if the canal is clean ? If it has been routed properly and you dont have any sorts of residues in the way it sounds OK to me, but I guess you have to trust the factory ahah). I’ve seen it done but don’t have first hand experience though ! What suggests Dan Erlewine is a great set of tools that are very useful, and in my opinion (and my limited experience), the best way to go (first) if you just have worn threads.

Thanks for the feedback 🙌. Yeah I think I’m going to thinks about getting the trus rod rescue kit. Again, sorry if I insist on this, but living in Argentina is not easy to have access to that kind of tools, they are really expensive for our economy right now. But probably in a couple of months.

For this one I decide to try the heel approach! Haha

Sorry for the delay in the update. 😅
Everything finally turned out well. I was able to remove the truss rod relatively easily. I clamped the neck to make the truss rod channel as straight as possible, and with a few taps from the other end, it came out. I had a new truss rod made, installed it, crafted a new piece out of maple, added a bit of color to the wood to match the rest of the neck, and then used CA glue to level it with the lacquer.

    Thanks for the help!
