Scratches and Dings on Black Finish

The Council of Elders meets regularly and takes questions on instrument repair and related topics. The question, and the Council’s answer, is below.

Question: Scratches and Dings on Black Finish

Guitar is a Canadian built Prestige New Yorker. The black headstock got scratched years ago when I lent it to someone at a studio (probably string change or headstock bumped into console or gear rack) and we’re trying to figure out if there is a clever way to remove it? Already tried buffing it out a little which didn’t change it much. Are there any other tricks to making hairline type scratches disappear on black that we should try? I’ve attached three pics to give you an idea of the damage. The bottom pick is probably the best where you can see the three scratches at top of headstock on treble side.

Thanks as always to the Ding Kings, Looth Legends and Guitar Gurus!

Best,
Theo
