Hi, I just saw the Trussrod repair/ new fretboard post by Dan Erlewine and Rodrigo Gomes. I really liked it, especially the idea of carving the fretboard with the table saw!
I could not comment on the article.
I am sure there was a reason for replacing the whole fingerboard in their case. I wanted to document an alternative method that I tried two weeks ago with sucess. I did not invent it though, i have seen it somewhere in the internet but do not remember where.
I knew, the rod was broken at the anker. So I removed just a piece of wood over the anker. i followed the grain lines for my cuts. I cut a short piece of a solid brass tube and drilled a stop hole where the anker was. I made the old truss rod pointy and hammered it in to index on the brass. I tapped threads on a 5mm steel stick that should become the new rod and the anker. and screwed it together in the neck. I secured with a pin and glued everything together with lots of epoxy. I glued the original piece of wood back I filled the gap that happened due to the saw width with a matching wedge of rosewood. Than refretted.
There is an angle from where the skilled eye can see the repair, but you really need to know where to look and most angles you can t see it at all. It took me 5 hours including some heat treatment because the neck was warped (i did not show that in the pictures) . I did not count the time for the refret that i had to do afterwards.
Maybe this can be of some help for someone who doesn t want to replace the fretboard?
Does anyone know where i might have seen the idea originally? I think it was some youtube video. If you do, you can maybe add the link?
