Fingerboard extension gap - new build
I’m nearing the end of my first build. I have about 1 mm gap above the top at the end of the fingerboard extension. I’ve read and seen some guidance to clamp that down while gluing the extension. Others seem to build in a wedge-shaped shim – although it seems that is mostly done with neck resets and not new builds. A straight edge on the frets…

What are you putting on your bench top?
I used the rubber waffle weave anti-slip mats until I noticed they left residue on bare wood and marked up lacquer. I used felt for a while but its splinter loving so nix that. Currently I’m using the SM pad with super cheap bath towels on top. The bath towels are cheap enough (buy them in sets on closeout) to rip into “grease rags” after…

I’m about to join the club- my cheap microphone I bought a year ago doesn’t work with my laptop so I just ordered the UMIK-1 Omni-Directional USB mic in Giuliano’s book. In the meantime, I’ve run REW with my PC microphone, so not posting anything until I get the UMIK.
It looks like my peaks are all lower in frequency that the lower limit in…

Hey Karl good to hear from you.
I did some testing with the canopy and Titebond Melamine glue. I’ve used a different melamine glue (roo glue) in the past and liked it.
The melamine and canopy glues both popped off.
Tried both with 80 grit scoring on the binding and that helped a lot. The canopy still came off after i got a fingernail on a…Karl Borum - Borum Acoustics -
Deflection vs. Frequency for measuring flexural modulus
I guess I don’t think that the minute differences in bracing stock are going to make measurable differences, ultimately I’m tuning the braces towards target frequencies and very importantly, target deflection which I think will likely account for the vast majority of these miniscule differences in tiny pieces of wood.
Ultimately I’m looking…

Fret pressing at heel transition
This is a cool whip, doesn’t look crazy to make. I think I reached out to the inventor for an interview at one point. Not sure what happened.

Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding fret selection and quality control – have you ever experienced fretwire where the tang is not perpendicular to the bead? I am starting to fret a guitar using Sintoms fretwire which I have never used before, but chose because of its oversized tang (.025”, same as the slots) and bead were the dimensions I…

It is actually fairly common and challenging to remedy. .004 is a pretty big gap, but if you need the torque from that larger tang, you might just fill it. All of the Jescar fretwire I put in is never as down as I like, but by the end of the job, so much detritus from the fretwork as filled the gap, I never notice.

Ok thanks Ian! That’s both reassuring and frustrating at the same time, but at least now I know that it’s not just me!

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
Those two tops look just like those split ones I got here, a Gibson Songwriter and a Martin GPC-something. One dark, the other very pale, with much larger splits though. I’ve reached out to the esteemed Mr. Di Burro to inquire about his technique involving full TJ cleats and tinted epoxy. Waiting for a reply but in no hurry as I’m not…

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
Nice idea. I already have a page about RH issues that gets republished at the top each year when the season comes. Getting an email sent to thousands of customers is another thing so you don’t get fragged as spam, though. This would required using the services of one of the specialized outfits to are known as legitimate bulk email senders. I…

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
It seems like there is talk of humidity going on, so I thought I’d throw in my two cents on that.
I have a 50s D18 in the basement that has no cracks and I guarantee has never been babied with humidity. My hypothesis with most cracks is that they have to do with manufacturers pushing wood cure, but that is beside the point really. There is…
